Jay Hall Connaway (1893 - 1970)

A lovely example of Connaway's Vermont winter paintings. Best know for his paintings of Monhegan and Vermont, Jay Hall Connaway lived on Monhegan in Maine and later in Dorset, Vermont. Born in Indiana, he studied at the Indianapolis Art Institute with John Herron, in New York City at the Art Students League with George Bridgman and William Merritt Chase, and after serving in WWI, in Paris at the Academy Julien and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. During the Depression he moved to Monhegan and established a painting school. In 1947 he moved to Dorset. A member of the National Academy, he was also a member of Allied Artists, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art, the Portland Society of Artists, and a trustee of the Southern Vermont Art Center. His many exhibitions include the Pennsylvania Academy, many solo shows at Vose Galleries, Macbeth Gallery, the Grand Central Gallery, and many more.
