Max Kuehne (1880 - 1968)

Born in Germany, Max Kuehne immigrated to Aemrica with his family and settled in New York City. He studied with William Merritt Chase, Kenneth Hayes, and Robert Henri. He then spent a year in Europe sometimes traveling with Ernest Lawson. In 1912 Kuehne made his first trip to Gloucester and by the 1920's kept a studio in Rockport, becoming part of an active art community that included Gifford Beal, Leon Kroll, Paul Manship, Edward Hopper and Jonas Lie. He exhibited at the National Academy, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Corcoran, the Whitney Museum and the Rockport Art Association.
