Dorset, Vermont artist, Wallace Fahnestock was born in Pennsylvania. He studied at the Cleveland School of Art, and then at the Art Students League with Frank Vincent DuMond, and also with William Merritt Chase. Fahnestock was one of a core group of artists working in Southern Vermont who became known as the Dorset Five. The group included Edwin Child, Francis Dixon, John Lillie and Herbert Mayer. In 1922 they held their first group show at the Dorset Town Hall. By 1929 they became known as the Southern Vermont Artists, holding their first show at the Equinox Pavilion, leading to the creation of the Southern Vermont Art Center.
