Born in Liberty, Indiana, Jay Connaway studied at the Indianapolis Art Institute with John Herron, at the Art Students League with William Merritt Chase and George Bridgman, and at the Academie Julian in Paris. A member of the National Academy, he exhibited widely winning numerous awards including at the National Academy, the Pennsylvania Academy, Grand Central Art Galleries and many more. In the 1920's he began painting on the Maine coast including Monhegan where he settled and ran a summer school. In 1947 he and his family moved to Dorset Vermont and then Pawlett. He was active in the Southern Vermont Art Association and was a trustee. An exceptional example of his Vermont paintings in original frame.
