An accomplished Philadelphia and Nantucket artist, Whitney studied architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then taught at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1906 he married artist Helen Reed (Whitney).The couple summered on Nantucket for many years and were part of the lively colony of artists working on the island. Their home, "Lightkeepers Lodge," was next to the Brandt Point Lighthouse. Whitney exhibited at the Boston Art Club, the Philadelphia Art Club, and the Pennsylvania Academy.
