new york artist edward pierre buyck was born in brussels, belgium. he studied at the royal academy of belgium and the ecole des beaux arts in paris, and was a member of the royal academy. during world war i he was wounded while serving with belgium forces, then came to the united states and served with the u.s. army. during this time he designed red cross, ymca, and army recruitment posters. he became an american citizen in 1918, living in glens falls. in 1920 he married mary willard vine, a landscape artist and interior designer. the couple settled in slingerlands. a lover of animals and nature, buyck ran the 1160 acre black mountain fox ranch at north rivr. druing the 1930's he was supervisor of the new york state wpa program, receiving the patronage of franklin d. roosevelt. buyck was known for his paintings of historical scenes, landscapes, racehorses, and for portraits of prominent politicians including f.d.r.
