Born in Iowa, Mary Kirkup studied at the Art Students League and in Provincetown with Charles Hawthorne. She frequently painted on Cape Cod and also traveled and painted in Paris, Holland, and England. She was also active in Chicago and in Washington, D.C. She made her home in Iowa and was editor for the Fort Dodge Messenger, for which she wrote and illustrated articles and poems. She exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the American Artists Professional League, the Society of Washington Artists, and the Washington (DC) Watercolor Club.
