Leonard Ochtman, N.A. (1854 � 1934)

Born in Holland, Ochtman later lived in Cos Cob, Connecticut. He came to the U.S. a boy in 1866 and settled with his family in Albany. He studied at the Art Students League in 1879 and returned to Albany to establish a studio. In 1880 he began to exhibit at the National Academy. In 1886 he studied in Holland with the Hague School painters including Jacob Maris and Anton Mauve. Returning to New York City, he shared a studio with Charles Warren Eaton and married artist Mina Fonda. The couple then settled in Cos Cob and with J. Alden Weir, Childe Hassam and John H. Twachtman founded the Cos Cob art colony. Ochtman also joined Birge Harrison in Woodstock where he served as an instructor and was active in the Arts and Crafts Movement and in the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony. Octman was a member of the Brooklyn Art Association, the Salmagundi Club, the Woodstock Art Association, the Society of Aemrican Artists, and the National Academy. He was also active at Old Lyme. His works are in the collections of the National Gallery, the Metropolitan, the Bruce Museum, and many more.
