One of the 19th c. "Lynn Beach Painters," who included Charles Woodbury, E.A. Page, Nathaniel Berry, Wm. Burpee, Edward Burrill, and Thomas Oliver. C.E.L. Green was born in Lynn to a shoemaker. Mostly self-taught, he also studied with Otis Webber. Green painted in the Lynn, Swampscott, and Nahant areas, and in 1886 worked in Magnolia, staying in the barn studio that had belonged to Wm. Morris Hunt. In the summer of 1887 he travelled with Woddbury to Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, and in the following years visited Europe and England, painting with the American colony at Concarneau in France, and in Cornwall England. He was a founding member of the Lynn Art Club in 1906, and an exhibitor at the National Academy, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Boston Art Club and the St. Botolph Club.
