At the Theater

New York artist Robert Philipp was born into the world of New York City theater. His father and uncle wrote and produced many hit Broadway shows, and robert was a capable tenor. Philipp entered the Art Students League at the age of fifteen, studying with Frank Vincent DuMond and George Bridgman, and then at the National Academy with Douglas Volk and George Maynard. During the 1920's he spent several years studying and painting in Paris. Philipp was elected into the National Academy and was a member of the Lotus Club. He also exhibited at the Corcoran, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Art Institute of Chicago, and many more, winning numerous medals and prizes. His work is in the collections of many musuems including the Whitney and the Metropolitan.
