Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Russell spent most of his life in the British Isles. He studied in Canada with Henry Rosenberg, and in Boston with Eric Pape, then in France at the Academie Julian and the Academie Colarossi. A member of the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, he also exhibited at the Royal Academy (1918) and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (1912 - 1914). His works are in the collections of many museums including the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and the National Galalery of Canada, which has ten of his works.
