Maine and New York City Modernist, Morris Shulman was born in Savannah, Georgia, and spent most of his professional life in Manhattan. He also spent many summers on Monhegan Island in Maine. He studied at the Art Students League, the National Academy, and with Hans Hofmann. Shulman held teaching positions at the Brooklyn Museum School and the School of Visual Art in NYC, the Philadelphia College of Art, and the Skowhegan Art School in Maine. His works are in the collections of the Smithsonian, the Metropolitan Museum, the Carnegie Institute, the Brooklyn Museum, Vassar College, Brandeis University, and Bates College in Maine.
