A founding member of the Salmagundi Club in 1871, Burns was one of America's best known marine artists during the late 19th c. and also a lifelong sailor. He travelled with William Bradford on the famous Arctic Expedition of 1869. He sailed along the Maine coast, the Grand Banks and the North Sea, doing illustrations for Harper's and other publications. He was one of the earliest artists to paint at Monhegan. A constant adventurer, he even lived aboard his sloops moored along the Hudson River. Burns exhibited at the Salmagundi Club, the National Academy, the Boston Art Club, and the Brooklyn Art Association. He was honored with a retrospective at the Mystic Seaport Museum in 1984.
