George Hopkins (1855 - 1924)

George Hopkins was born in Covington, Kentucky. He studied at the Cincinnati Art School and in Germany at the Royal Academy in Munich. In 1880 he joined Frank Duveneck's group of American painters in Italy, and in Venice formed a friendship with James McNeill Whistler and Henry James.

Returning to the United States, he was Director of the Art School at Kansas State College in Manhattan, at the Art Association in Topeka from 1886-1891, and in the Art Department at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, from 1891-93. Hopkins was back in Topeka in 1894 and living in Chicago, Illinois in 1898.

His works are in the collections of the Kansas State Historical Society.
